APS Lowers Cost for Volunteer Background Checks

Price Reduced from $18 to $12 to Encourage More School Volunteers

[Albuquerque, N.M.] – Albuquerque Public Schools has lowered the cost of volunteer background checks to $12, down $6 from the past two years and more than $20 from three years ago. The cost has been reduced in an effort to keep encouraging more parents and community members to volunteer in classrooms, schools and with extracurricular activities.

"We want to encourage parents and members of the community to volunteer in our schools, but at the same time we have to make sure our students are safe," said APS Superintendent Winston Brooks. "By continuing to reduce the fee for background checks, we're hoping more individuals are willing to dedicate their time to helping our kids."

The APS Human Resources Department has contracted with a new company to conduct the background checks this school year. Kelmar Global offers the same service at a lower rate, and the savings are being passed on to volunteers.

The background checks don't require fingerprinting. Instead, an extensive search of a volunteer's background is conducted using such information as date of birth and social security number. Additional information may be requested.

The search includes criminal records, departments of corrections records and sex offender registries. In addition, it looks at driving records. Multiple traffic violations could impede a volunteer's ability to drive students to and from school-sponsored activities.

The process for background checks hasn't changed:

· First, volunteers should get a volunteer confidentiality form signed by the school's principal.

· Next, they should take the form to the first floor of the APS administrative offices, 6400 Uptown Blvd., along with a picture ID and a $12 cashier's check, money order or credit card. No personal checks or cash are accepted.

· Volunteers who have cleared their background check will receive a volunteer card distributed by the school. They will be required to present this card each time they volunteer for a school activity.

APS requires that all individuals who might be alone with students have a background check. For more information on volunteering for APS, go to

Prospective APS employees and contractors will still pay $33 for background checks that include fingerprinting.
